A practical plan for a two-hour murder mystery night online for two to eight people: set up the room, assign folders, run the argument and reveal the votes.
A cold case file is the easiest murder mystery night to host, because nobody has to act, dress up or learn a character. Everyone is a detective reading the same folder. Here is a plan that works for a table of friends or a video call across time zones.
Everyone reads the incident report and the cold case memo, then the persons-of-interest sheet. Now everyone knows the victim, the six names and the question.
With four players: one on Witness Statements, one on Records, one on Forensics and Photographs, one on Police Reports and Personal Documents. Beside each document the room shows the initials of who has opened it, so you can see coverage at a glance. After forty minutes, swap. The contradictions are between folders, and the second reader catches what the first assumed.
Put the timeline on one sheet in the middle of the table, or share a screen. Go suspect by suspect: what do they claim, which record supports it, which record breaks it. Insist on documents. "He seems guilty" is not admitted.
When the table is ready, or when the host calls time, everyone presses Accuse on their own phone and votes in secret. The host presses Reveal. The votes appear side by side, the case closes for everyone at once and the solution opens on every screen. Read it aloud. Then find out who read the right document and did not believe it.
Two to three hours with a break. If you are on a call, a fifteen-minute silent reading block at the start works better than talking while reading.
