Saturday, 15 August 2020. Phoenix is on its fourteenth day over 110 degrees, and the short-term rental business is half shut by the pandemic. Corinne Hadley, 49, owns a small mid-century guest house in Arcadia that she took off the StayNest rental platform on 1 July because she meant to sell it. The listing has been dark for seven weeks. Her thermostat says the house has not been empty for any of them.
That evening she lets herself in, sends a text, orders groceries to the door and waits. At 10:51 on Sunday her real estate agent, arriving to get the house ready for listing photographs, finds her face down in the living room. The sliding door is barred from inside, and the groceries are still on the front step, melted through their bags.
A keypad lock, a thermostat, a delivery app, two phones and a rental platform all kept records that night. Six people had a code, a grudge or a reason. Read the records and decide.
