The case

Sunday, 5 February 2023, turnover day in a Colorado ski town. Nadia Corbett, 41, who manages forty short-term rentals for absentee owners, lets herself into the Aspen Ridge Chalet at 15:40 to inspect it between guests. On Monday morning the housekeeper finds her on the frozen ground twelve feet below the upper deck.

The Sheriff's first thought is ice. The pathologist finds finger bruises on both upper arms and a blow to the back of the head that came before the fall. On Thursday Nadia had found two concealed cameras in the chalet's bedrooms, photographed the account that owned them, and booked the town licensing office for Monday at nine.

Six people had a code to that door, a grudge, or a flight to catch: the absentee owner, the housekeeper she fired, the competitor, the estranged husband, Saturday's furious guest, and the neighbour who wanted every rental on the street gone. A lock, a doorbell, a charger, a car, a lift pass and a rink camera wrote down where each of them was.
